Anecdote*22 March 1850It would seem plausible to suppose that this is an early activity of Richard as an entrepreneur. Quite possibly these houses were built by Richard who is selling them to make money for the next venture.22

(Witness) Description1859Richard Cordner witnessed the description of Charlotte Cordner as Obituary in Durham Chronicle 1859 for Charlotte Ayre nee Cordner. This obituary seems rather fanciful and many of the claims do not seem to be supported by the facts. With regard to the Red Barn Murder story Maria Marten was born on 24th July 1801 and James was discharged from the Durham Fencibles in June 1802. This would suggest that the two girls were unlikely to have been playmates in the sense suggested in the obituary. James of course also appears in the Muster Rolls in various non commissioned ranks and not in charge of any company. in 1859.29

    DURHAM

The county formed four admin battalions, which were consolidated in 1880 to form four new corps numbered 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th. All pre-1880 corps were included, save for the 3rd, which was of sufficient strength to remain independent.

    Page 78

20th Formed as one company at Stanhope with Captain John Joseph Roddam, Lieutenant Richard Cordner and Ensign William Christopher Arnison commissioned on 19 February 1861. Joined the 2nd Admin Battalion and became 'E' Company of the new 2nd Corps in 1880. A Savings Bank, which also included a reading room, library and lecture hall, was opened five years after the 20th Corps was formed. The old Frosterley & Stanhope line reached the town in 1862, the station being closed in 1895 and a new one opened just to the south-west when the railway was extended to Wearhead.
